Motorcycle Tire Maintenance

When thinking of tire maintenance, it is not just checking the tire pressure, but that is a great place to start. It is also about looking at the condition of the tire, looking at the valves, are the tires broken in yet, and more. Tires are the only thing between the rider and the road. Flat tires and blow outs can’t always be foreseen, but hopefully, if you check your tires out, you will be able to avoid an issue while riding.

First thing is to check your owner’s manual to find out how much air pressure is correct for your tires. The pressure in the front tire can be different than the recommended pressure in the back tire. Tire pressure can influence the wear and tear of your tires. A tire that is under-inflated will generate a lot of heat and wear down more quickly. An over-inflated tire can blow and is easier to puncture on a bump or crack in the road. As part of your maintenance kit, you should always have a tire pressure gauge, which are about the size of a pencil.

Look at the tires. Do they have enough tread? Typically around 1 to 2 mm means it is time to get a new tire. One test is to take a penny and put it in the tread. If the tread is not touching Abraham Lincoln’s head, then it is time to get a new tire. Also, are the tires starting to crack or experience dry rot? Are there any bulges or indentations starting to form? Is there anything (nail, screw, or other object) stuck in the tire? How are the rims? Are there any indentions?

Are the tires new? If so, take it easy on them and let them break in for about 100 miles. Just like putting on a new pair of loafers, the tread can be very slick, especially on a wet surface. The 100 miles should put enough scuff marks on the tires to give you the needed traction.

Know the load capacity of your tires too and adjust your bike accordingly. Having one passenger may be ok for a tire, but adding a second passenger, plus luggage may exceed the recommended load for the tire, which could also be dangerous.

Good tires are vital. They help keep us on our bikes and rolling down the road. You definitely want good traction on curves, in rain, on slick surfaces, etc. Having a flat while on a trip is one of the most frustrating things. Spend a few minutes, check the tires, and hopefully avoid having a bad experience while on the road.
