Riding the Talimena
The Talimena Scenic Drive is 54 miles
of incredible curvy roads, beautiful
landscape, the occasional deer standing
on the side of the road, and a lot
of fun to ride on the bike. It is located
in Eastern Oklahoma/Western Arkansas
and runs along the top of the
Ouachita mountains .
There are lots of gentle twists and turns, with an occasional sharp curve
to
keep you on your toes. There are viewing areas that overlook the mountains,
which are absolutely breath taking. The Talimena Scenic Drive was designated
an American Byway on September 22, 2005.
With the warm weather we have had, we were about 2 weeks early for the
changing of the leaves, but the panoramic views were well worth the ride.
At
some points, it felt like we would be slung into heaven.
After cruising the Talimena, we ventured up
to Mount Magazine . Mount Magazine is
Arkansas‘ highest mountain, rising to a
height of 2,753 feet! It is bordered by the
Arkansas River to the North and the Petit Jean River to the South. The South
side of the mountain offers lots of twists
and turns for some peg scraping excitement.
Another road in the area is Arkansas 23 - the Pig Trail Scenic Byway. That
is the curviest road I have been on so far. Coming out of a hair-pin curve
and
then accelerating up a hill was truly a rush. The road was also loaded
with
sharp turns and quick dips. It was like being on a roller coaster, except
there
are other bikes and cars coming at you and possible critters venturing
on the
road. Would I do it again? You bet!
Highly recommend filling up the gas tank before attacking these roads
and
make sure your tires are properly inflated. You will need all the gas
and
traction you can get. Also, make sure you watch the speed signs, as they
are pretty accurate for taking the curves.
This area is truly pretty and every curve revealed another eye-popping
treasure.
Can’t wait to go back and ride the Talimena again soon.
